How Long a Layover You Actually Want

For many travelers, a three- to five-hour layover can provide a reasonable balance between connection time and total journey length for a JFK to Dhaka layover.

Under two hours leaves no margin. If your inbound runs late, you miss the connection, and rebooking to Dhaka is not simple because onward flights do not depart hourly. Keep both legs on one ticket. Here is the trap. Etihad states directly that its Basic fare does not include any checked baggage allowance.

• Qatar Airways uses the piece concept between the Americas and Dhaka. Economy Lite includes 1 × 23 kg, while Classic, Convenience and Comfort generally include 2 × 23 kg. Economy cabin baggage is 1 × 7 kg. 

• Emirates also uses the piece concept for flights to and from the Americas. Economy Special includes 1 × 23 kg, while Saver, Flex and Flex Plus generally include 2 × 23 kg each for routes such as the U.S. to South Asia. Economy cabin baggage is one piece up to 7 kg.

• Etihad Airways varies significantly by fare. Economy Basic includes no free checked baggage, but it still includes 1 × 7 kg cabin baggage. Value, Comfort and Deluxe fares between the U.S. and Bangladesh generally include 2 × 23 kg checked bags.

Baggage allowance can change by airline, fare type and ticket, so always check the allowance shown on your booking before you pay. If you need extra baggage, buying it online before departure is usually cheaper than paying at the airport. Emirates, for example, explicitly offers advance-purchase discounts on extra baggage.

Should You Fly from JFK, Newark, or Somewhere Else?

JFK carries the most Dhaka connections, but it is not automatically the cheapest departure point.

Newark often prices differently for the same connecting flight, and the gap can reach a couple of hundred dollars. Compare fares from Newark to Dhaka before you commit.
